Google Takes the Lowroad

I saw this banner a few weeks on Youtube. It was animated, so that the girl moved and a chat message popped up. Obviously designed to make you think some girl was chatting live with you. This is pretty much no different than a spammy pop up that says “Do you want to remove spyware?” With a yes / no button that starts a download.

Surprised Google would accept an ad like this in their world of Do No Evil….

Shame on You: Register.com

Stay away from Register.com. You probably know that already, but make sure you tell your friends….

Why? Because if you ever want to transfer your name away from them you need to call them in order to get the authorization code. During business hours. On the east coast. No holidays. Of course their sales reps are available 24×7.

While every other company will allow you to get your transfer codes via email, Register.com will not.

Working on a big project and need to get the domain to another registrar over a 3 day weekend? Sorry.

Live in California and decide to call to transfer your domain name at 3:15pm? Not gonna work.

And what happens when you do get someone on the phone? They talk and talk and talk and try to stop you from transferring your name and stick with Register.com. They will claim that this “telephone only” transfer is so that names are not stolen from their owners, but this simply isn’t they case. They are simply trying to make more money by making it difficult to transfer your names away from them.

STAY AWAY FROM REGISTER.COM. Spread the word.

Shame on You Network Solutions

Big firestorm in the domain world this week about Network Solutions registering every domain name that is looked up on their site - and then keeping the name for a period of 4 days during which you can only register the name through Network solutions - for $35.  After the 4th day they release the name (so they aren’t charged because they are just “tasting” the name).  So any name you look up to see if it is available on Network Solutions will  immediately  take the name.

NEVER waster your money with Network Solutions - head over to GoDaddy or Moniker and get your names for $10.  Spread the word…
