Mahalo - The New Perez Hilton?

I was reading an article about a NJ divorce that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is involved in. He allegedly has been having an affair with a married women named Sharon Shenocca. After reading the article I did what most red blooded internet marketers would do – I googled her to see if I could find a picture. One of the top Google results that came up for her was a Mahalo page for her. I thought it was a bit odd that Mahalo – who claims their goal is to create pages for the top 50,000 search terms would bother to create a page about a New Jersey secretary who had an affair with an NFL coach.

A few weeks later I read an article about an affair at a high school between a principal and an assistant principal that got both of them fired from their district. Again, in my “quest for the truth” I googled the woman’s name and guess what popped up – Mahalo – featuring a page built about both the principal and the assistant principal.

I’m not sure if Mahalo is creating pages for “dirty laundry” personalities because there is a huge demand by the public for a quality guide to Bill Belichick’s mistress , or because they see it as low hanging fruit in their bid to increase traffic. But I do know one thing – these pages are worthless without pictures….

Mobile Devices - MLB.com Good, NFL.com Bad

Sahar at Conceptualist has a post about creating your site so that it can be read on mobile devices. Although I haven’t done it yet for this site, it is something that needs to be done for almost every site - and for EVERYONE who has a corporate / business site.

MLB.com has been ahead of the tech curve for years, and if you bring up MLB.com on your mobile device the first thing you see are all the scores of current and recent games. This makes perfect sense as this is what most people are probably looking for if they are on their phones.

NFL.com however is a different story - on a mobile device the page loads a pretty boring WAP specific page (this is new in the past few weeks - previously it was their normal site) with links to subpages, including the scores subpage. If you click on the scores page it only loads 4 scores per page, so you may have to click the link 4 times in order to find the score you want (seriously - would it be that tough to load 16 scores per page??). As a result I use Sportsline.com when I want to catch a football score on my phone.

If you run a business, the # 1 thing I recommend doing is making sure your phone number quickly loads on the page if someone has a mobile device. When I got to a website on my phone, it is frequently to find the phone number of the company, not to do in depth research on a product or service. If your “contact us” page is hidden or uses flash you are making it difficult for people on phones to find and contact your business - which is probably the point of having a website in the first place.
