Elliot has a good post today about analyzing your domain portfolio, and he talks about an affliction a lot of rookie domainers have - buying nonsensical names….
A lot of people in the domain world have a lot of really bad names. If you have names that don’t have much type in traffic (and the value of type in traffic appears to be falling), the biggest determining factor for whether you’ll be able to sell your name is “Would Someone Build a Site with this Name?”
People aren’t going to build a site on a domain that makes no sense. Names like and “FishingPolesReels.com” or “NJSalesHomes.com” are for sale every day on the forums – and I can’t comprehend that anyone will ever pay anything for some of these names. Generics will always sell, and brandables have big potential. The biggest sale I personally have had was “WidgetsDirect.com” - a name that I previously hadn’t put too much value on but was a nice, clear name for a company who wanted to sell widgets.
So before you register that next name – if someone is going to invest time and money into building a website , would they consider using the name for it?
