In the U.S. it is illegal to market alcohol based on the alcohol levels - ie, you can’t call a vodka “Big Buzz Vodka”, and there are restrictions on the prominence of how large the alcohol percentage appears on the label.
But in Canada marketing beer based on the alcohol levels is a not only allowed, it seems to be encouraged. I was in a grocery store last week in Quebec where I saw these bottles of beer for sale. Each brand offers 4-5 different alcohol options for the exact same beer - ranging from the standard level of about 5.5% to the high test 10% + alcohol beer.
Imagine the possibilities of being able to throttle your buzz based on which can of beer you buy rather than how much you pour down your throat. Yet another reason I’m a big fan of Canada…
